Scarborough, South Bay
A variety of activities suitable for all ages.
Children can enjoy building sandcastles, playing in amusement arcades, or splashing in the waves.
Visitors can explore two large sandy bays separated by a rocky promontory that houses the historical ruins of 11th-century Scarborough Castle.
South Bay is the more vibrant of the two beaches, lined with cafes, ice cream parlours, shops, theatres, and various entertainment options typical of a traditional seaside resort. Donkey rides are available on the beach.
At one end of the bay, the harbor provides mooring for fishing vessels, yachts, and pleasure boats, with boat trips available around the bay or further down the coast.
The South Cliff Promenade, located above the Spa and South Cliff Gardens, offers extensive views of South Bay.
The South Bay also features the largest illuminated 'star disk' in the UK, measuring 26 meters (85 feet) across and equipped with underground lights representing the 42 brightest stars and major constellations visible from Scarborough in the northern skies.
The beach is popular among families and occasionally has favorable conditions for surfing.
