Peasholm Park Boating Lake
Peasholm Park was restored to its Japanese-themed design in June 2007, featuring a reconstructed pagoda. A new boathouse was added in 2018. In 1896, Harry W. Smith played a significant role in transforming much of Scarborough, particularly through his development of Peasholm, showcasing his creative abilities.
While many viewed his plans as extravagant, referring to it as “the borough engineer's baby,” Smith envisioned excavating the swamp around Peasholm Beck to create a lake. His plan included paths, flower beds, a boathouse, a café, and a bridge designed in the Japanese style, creating a willow pattern aesthetic.
Peasholm Park, with its scenic lake, beautiful gardens, and various activities, is one of Scarborough’s notable central parks. Spanning 40 acres (16 hectares), it offers views of the North Sea. Visitors can walk around the lake, which encircles a picturesque island.
In the summer, people can enjoy picnics under trees, play sports, or observe games of cricket and soccer. Boats, including traditional rowing boats, canoes, and pedal boats with dragon heads, are available for rent on the artificial lake. Families can also relax in the Swan Launch motorboat.
